Balbin ... a
A male seal was found on 31 March
1992 in Jurata's vicinity. It was 2 months old then and
was still covered with the white fluff. It weighted 14
kilos and was approx. 1 meter long. It was sick and
wounded.
Balbin was taken to the Marine Station of the University
of Gdansk in Hel, where for the first few days it was
kept in a specially facilitated container. It refused to
eat. After disinfecting of wounds, the seal was placed in
an improvised pool, where it remained for five years.
Agata, Anna, Krystyna, Ewa - were born between 1st and
3rd May 1998 in their natural habitat of the Estonian
island Allirahu.
On 3rd April 1998 the little seals were transported to
the Marine Station in Hel. Before they could join the
seals in pools of Hel, they underwent a four-week-long
quarantine in a specially facilitated isolation pool.
Here they experienced their first contact with water as
well as learned to eat.
